Frequently Asked Questions

What do we mean by "tryouts?" The Diocese of Columbus recommends that if there are enough players for two teams in grades 7 and/or 8, we assess skill levels and create both a competitive level team and a recreational level team. This way, players have the greatest chance for success, development, and playing time. Everyone who registers to play volleyball will have a slot on a team. There are no cuts. If someone knows they prefer the recreational team, they are not required to try out.

Can you play SMS soccer and also play SMS volleyball? Yes, many players do this. There is about one month overlap between the two sports and coaches try to work out practice schedules so that players don't have to miss too much of either sport. A soccer game always outweighs a volleyball practice, though. The heaviest overlap is during the month of August.

What are practice schedules like? Teams practice in the SMS gym, generally twice a week for about an hour and a half, between the hours of 3:30 PM and 9 PM, M-F. Some teams will practice on Sunday afternoon in lieu of one weeknight. Before school is in session, there are occasional extra practices on Saturdays or wherever practices can be fit in.

What will the game schedule be like? The games generally start around mid-September and run through early November and are played on Saturdays and/or Sundays. Saturday is the heavier day for games. Games are played at several diocesan school sites.

What if there aren't enough players for a team? Two grades can join together for a team if necessary but they are required to enter a division at the higher grade level of the two. Also, SMS can join up with other diocesan schools to form teams if needed. This all takes great coordination so we need everyone registered by the deadline!

Equipment needed: The school will provide the uniforms. Players are responsible for sports socks, athletic shoes, knee pads and water bottles. Spandex shorts are prohibited by the Diocese.
